Fiery Jack heat rub

Injuries suck.  Nuff said!  From my point of view, I've always firmly believed in self preservation first and foremost.  With Parkour, if practised correctly and safely, you'll get very few problems along the way.  But if you fail to carry out little safety measures, you'll only be lining yourself up for possible injury and then having the hassle of sitting out on the sidelines while everyone carries on practising.  This on its own is probably one of the most frustrating things ever for an active free-runner.

In order to help avoid the injury scenario, its always advised to make an extra point of warming up properly prior to starting your practise.  For me, I've always been extra paranoid about the knee area as I know people who've had niggling problems which have sidelined them for lengthy periods of time.  In most cases they reflect on the situation and admit that their preparation simply hadn't been up to scratch.  How many people reading this can honestly say that they've never turned up to jam and have skipped a warm up in favour of jumping head first into PK action?  I've done it in the past plenty of times.  Most notably at an indoor session where I ended up picking up a patella inflammation that I've been trying to get rid of ever since.

Since then I have devised a little check list which goes something like - Thorough warm up (at least 20 mins) , application of Fiery Jack, wearing neoprene straps for knees, practise hard, warm down thoroughly at end of session.  So far its worked a treat.

Ok, lets get to the point about the Fiery Jack stuff.......Basically there are a bunch of creams and ointments on the market like Deep heat and Tiger Balm.  They all have properties that provide heat to the area applied, but with Fiery Jack, you get an ointment that can only be likened to Napalm.  Its made from hard paraffin and peanut oil as opposed to the others which have menthol/alcohol properties which don't last anywhere near as long.  At some of the longer Parkour sessions I've had, the very first application of the day has kept my knees on fire for up to 8 hours solid.  My line of thinking is that if the knees are kept hot, the chances of picking up an injury are kept to a minimum.  Going back to the people I know who've picked up injuries from Parkour - they are generally from not warming up properly. But a lot are from jamming hard then resting or going for a food break and allowing the muscles to go cold without paying any attention.  Then when jumping straight back into action without warming up again......Ping!  With Fiery Jack, the area that its applied to stays hot at all times.

For any sceptics, I'd say give it a try especially as the winter approaches and the cold/wet weather is looming.  If you are serious about your training, you'll either be working through the winter in a gym or actually doing it like its meant to be done - on the streets.  Either that or you'll be at home on your PS2 playing the PK game.....ooooops, that's not out yet. ;)

Seriously, I'd advise anyone planning on training through the winter to give it a go.  You can pick some up from any good pharmacist and it'll only cost you about £2 and will last you about a year.
The key is to apply only a little bit and rub it in well.  Use too much and you'll be in tears.  Also, make sure that you wash your hands afterwards, as if you use the toilet and get any on your nether regions, you WILL cry.  I once stupidly applied some to a groin strain I'd picked up from tic tac practise and spent an hour in agony with tears streaming down my face.  You have been warned!

Can also be bought in a cream form but I don't think its as good as the tinned wax variety.
